Body Lift in Miami, FL

Reveal Your Curves

Aging, pregnancy, genetics, and substantial weight loss can produce pronounced and overhanging folds of skin throughout the lower body. Having a considerable amount of excess skin can cause physical discomfort and make it difficult to wear form-fitting clothing with confidence. While traditional at-home fitness methods may help firm and tone the underlying musculature, significant skin laxity can only be corrected with a body contouring procedure.

Body lift surgery involves removing excess skin and fat from the abdomen. This procedure tightens the lower midsection, creating a stunning definition that complements the figure. By performing body lift surgery, Dr. Mendieta can restore your silhouette to a gorgeous shape and eliminate the burden of carrying bothersome, excess, sagging skin.

What Is a Body Lift?

A body lift is a customized body-contouring procedure designed to remove loose, sagging skin from the midsection, back, thighs, and/or buttocks. There are many approaches to this procedure, which are determined by the patient's needs. Not every patient needs to address loose skin on the back, for example, and some may need more thigh revision than others.

Dr. Mendieta tailors each body lift to each patient's needs, carefully considering safety and aesthetic outcomes. The overarching goal of a body lift is to address loose skin and tissues, as well as pockets of fat, to create a more contoured silhouette.

Benefits of a Body Lift

A body lift is a major surgical procedure that offers transformative benefits for patients with excessive layers of loose skin and tissue resulting from massive weight loss. As such, it has emotional, physical, and aesthetic benefits that can be life-changing for patients.

Benefits of a body lift include:

  • Reduced skin irritation, rashes, or chafing caused by loose skin
  • Improved body contours
  • More clothing choices
  • Enhanced confidence
  • Improved mobility and ability to exercise more effectively

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for a Body Lift?

Candidates for a body lift have excess, hanging skin often caused by rapid weight loss from bariatric surgery, GLP-1s, or other methods. In some cases, previous obesity stretches the skin, tissues, and even abdominal muscles, and when the weight is lost, these structures do not snap back into place. Aging and genetics can also play a role, as a loss of skin elasticity is a common issue for body lift candidates.

Ideal body lift candidates:

  • Have excess skin and loose tissue that cannot be remedied with exercise and diet
  • Are close to their goal weight, but might have some stubborn fat pockets remaining
  • Want to remove excess skin for a toned, contoured result
  • Have skin irritations or mobility limitations due to their excess skin
  • Have reasonable expectations for results
  • Are in good health
  • Are willing to quit smoking prior to surgery

It should be noted that body lift procedures are not meant for weight loss; rather, they are designed for patients who have already lost weight. Some stubborn pockets of fat are typically okay and are often treated during liposuction, but the goal of this procedure is to tone and refine the body and skin after weight loss has already occurred. For your safety and the aesthetic success of this procedure, your surgeon will require you to maintain a stable, healthy weight prior to surgery.

What Body Contouring Procedures Can I Combine With My Body Lift?

Dr. Mendieta will determine the most efficient approach to your body lift procedure after evaluating your individual goals and needs during your consultation. He may examine your body to determine which combination of procedures is best for your needs and goals; be sure to discuss what you want to address during the procedure so he can work with you to design the ideal combination.

Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck may be performed to improve the abdomen and repair the rectus abdominis muscles, achieving a corseted effect. It’s very common for obesity or pregnancy to stretch the abdominal wall, resulting in a condition called diastasis recti, which makes it very difficult to properly engage the abdominal muscles during exercise and results in a puffy bulge in the midsection. A tummy tuck not only addresses loose skin throughout the abdomen but can also resolve diastasis recti by surgically tightening the abdominal muscles, allowing them to heal.

Liposuction

Patients with remaining fat deposits may achieve optimal results from adding liposuction to their body lift procedure. This procedure is very versatile and can help make the aesthetic results of your surgery look more seamless and natural. Dr. Mendieta or your surgeon will use a thin tube, called a cannula, to carefully and artfully remove fat to achieve a natural contour.

Breast Lift

While weight loss can be a freeing, life-changing process, a loss of breast elasticity and volume can result in a less-than-amazing look. If you’re experiencing breast ptosis, or sagging, due to aging, weight fluctuations, or past pregnancies, a breast lift is the perfect companion procedure to your body lift. This procedure enhances the appearance of the breasts by lifting them higher on the chest, repositioning downturned or stretched nipples, and removing excess skin for a youthful, perky result.

Preparing for Your Body Lift

Preparing for your body lift can make the process much easier and smoother, and help you mentally prepare for the procedure and recovery. Your expert body contouring surgeon will discuss what you need to address prior to surgery, which may include:

  • Undergoing necessary medical testing and diagnostics, especially for patients with certain conditions
  • Stopping or pausing certain medications or herbal supplements that can affect healing or surgery
  • Quitting smoking and all tobacco use
  • Maintaining a stable weight

It’s a good idea to ensure you are at a stable, satisfying weight prior to your procedure. For one, this will help you maintain your weight after the procedure, as weight fluctuations can reverse results. But it's also important to feel confident about your health journey before the procedure. While it's surely tempting to undergo your body lift immediately after you drop the weight, your surgeon may advise you to wait at least a few months to allow for any weight regain.

What to Expect During Body Lift Surgery

Body Lift Consultation

The first step in revealing your new self is a consultation with your experienced body-contouring surgeon at 4Beauty by Mendieta. During this meeting, you’ll be able to discuss your goals for the procedure, including which combination procedures might be ideal. Your surgeon will ask you questions about your medical history and any prior surgeries, such as bariatric surgery, examine the treatment area, and show you before-and-after photos to give you a good idea of what you can reasonably expect from the results. They will also discuss the potential surgical steps and recovery process with you.

If you and your surgeon both decide that a body lift is right for you, they will create a customized surgical plan detailing the steps they will take during your procedure. This will include other procedures, such as a breast lift, if indicated. Lastly, they will provide you with an accurate cost estimate.

Body Lift Procedure

Body lift surgery is performed using general anesthesia and may last between four and six hours from start to finish. This procedure involves reshaping and restoring the physique to a firmer, more appealing condition through skin excision and other restorative techniques. Body lift surgery can enhance the appearance of the abdomen, thighs, and buttocks. The inner, outer, posterior, or circumference of the thigh may be altered during this type of enhancement.

First, a circumferential incision is created around the midsection, and an apron of excess tissue is carefully removed. Dr. Mendieta then lifts the buttocks and thighs to achieve a smoother, more youthful appearance. The abdominal wall may be surgically tightened, and liposuction may be used to smooth the surrounding areas and remove excess fat. Lastly, any other combined procedures, like a breast lift, will be performed.

Once your surgeon is pleased with the results, they will carefully close the incisions with sutures. You will be bandaged and fitted with a compression garment appropriate to the technique used and the treatment areas. Due to the length of the procedure and the level of revision, many patients will be required to stay in an overnight recovery facility so our team can monitor their early healing.

Body Lift Recovery & Aftercare

Patients may experience bruising, swelling, and discomfort following their body lift procedure. Dr. Mendieta will prescribe pain medication to manage postoperative discomfort. He also recommends that his patients consider adding Exparel injections for pain. Exparel must be administered during the procedure and will be an additional cost, but will reduce pain by up to 80%.

Bandages and the necessary compression garments will be applied to help reduce the risk of these side effects. Drains are usually inserted to prevent fluid accumulation during recovery. Fatigue is very common after a body lift, so be sure to listen to your body and get as much rest as possible. You may have a hard time walking around your house for a time. Be sure to have a responsible adult at home with you to help you in the first few days.

Most patients can resume work two weeks after surgery, but they must refrain from strenuous activity for at least six weeks. As soon as you are able, try light cardio around the house to reduce the risk of blood clots after the procedure.

What Results Can I Expect From a Body Lift?

You will notice an immediate improvement following your body lift surgery. In the months after your procedure, as swelling dissipates and your body adjusts to its new physique, your results will continue to improve. Body lift patients are simply ecstatic at their results, as this is the final step in their aesthetic journey after losing weight. After a body lift, you can finally enjoy the results of your weight loss with a more pleasing silhouette, no longer obscured by loose skin.

Get ready to show off your new figure and continue improving your physique with more effective exercise and greater confidence.

Body Lift FAQs

When can I exercise after a body lift?

About four to six weeks into recovery, you may take short, light walks. Vigorous exercise and heavy lifting must be avoided for eight weeks. Depending on your custom surgical plan, you will receive detailed aftercare instructions outlining your physical limitations.

Will I have visible scarring after my body lift?

You can expect to have some scarring after body lift surgery. However, Dr. Mendieta meticulously places all incisions in discrete locations so they can be concealed with clothing and undergarments. All scars tend to fade over time, and most body lift patients feel the benefits of the procedure outweigh the risk of scarring.

Is a body lift permanent?

The outcome of body lift surgery is considered permanent. This procedure, however, does not prevent the effects of subsequent aging or weight gain, so maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle is crucial for preserving your results.

What are the risks associated with body lift surgery?

While it is uncommon to experience severe complications after body lift surgery, some of the risks associated with the procedure include:

  • Prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Changes in sensation
  • Scarring
  • Abnormal reaction to anesthesia
Is it safe to undergo body lift surgery?

Yes. Body lift surgery is very safe. As with any surgery, there are potential risks after a body lift procedure.

Schedule a consultation with your plastic surgeon to discuss your specific risks. Your surgeon will review your medical history and current health to confirm that you are a viable and safe candidate for the procedure.

Is there a non-surgical option for a body lift?

Unfortunately, if you have extremely loose skin after significant weight loss, only a surgical procedure can remove it. However, post-surgery, you can maintain skin tightness and tone with non-surgical body contouring procedures.

Is a body lift an outpatient procedure?

While this can be an outpatient procedure, it may be recommended that you spend one night at the facility after your operation.

Is a body lift covered by insurance?

Some insurance providers will cover a portion of the cost of surgery in cases of extreme weight loss. Ultimately, your coverage will depend on your insurance provider and your plan.

It is recommended that you reach out to your provider directly for more information, as most plastic surgery procedures are considered elective (thereby preventing insurance coverage).
