What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that enhances the size and shape of the breasts using implants. It is the ultimate breast enhancement procedure, fully customizable to your exact specifications. Choose the size, type, and placement of your implants to increase the size of your breasts and reveal your most confident self.

Benefits of Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic procedure for a reason: patients can transform their figure with this single procedure, increasing the size of the breasts for a sexy, feminine result. Other benefits of a breast augmentation include:

  • Increased breast size
  • Improved breast shape and aesthetic
  • Improved breast symmetry
  • Restored breast volume after pregnancy or weight loss
  • A more balanced figure
  • Increased self-confidence

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

If you once had voluptuous breasts but have since lost volume and shape after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, or aging, a breast augmentation can restore the shape and size of your breasts for a stunning result. Candidates may also have naturally smaller breasts, their breasts are different sizes, or are an unappealing shape.

In addition to desiring an enhancement to their breast appearance, ideal breast augmentation patients:

  • Are generally in good health
  • Have reasonable expectations for results
  • Are nonsmokers or are willing to quit

What Are My Breast Augmentation Options?

You’ll be able to fully customize your breast augmentation to your specifications to create the look you’ve always wanted. Working with one of our talented breast enhancement specialists, you will choose from a variety of breast augmentation options to achieve your goals.

One of the main customizations with breast augmentation is the choice of implant: silicone vs. saline, anatomical vs. round, and more. From there, you’ll also discuss the breast implant placement and profile, which all add up to your final, unique result. We’ll discuss these options below.

  • Saline Implants

Saline breast implants are FDA-approved for patients over 18 years old. They are made up of a silicone outer shell and are filled with a medical-grade saline solution, or sterile saltwater. Because the body can safely absorb saline, ruptures from saline implants are safer than alternatives.

  • Silicone Implants

Silicone breast implants are FDA-approved for patients over 22 years old and consist of a silicone outer shell filled with a soft silicone gel. This implant type is popular as silicone breast implants most closely resemble natural breast tissue in look and feel. Since the implant comes pre-filled from the manufacturer, a longer incision is likely necessary, which limits the incision options.

  • Gummy Bear Implants

The newest type of breast implant is known as the “gummy bear” or cohesive silicone implant. Made up of a thick silicone gel, gummy bear implants hold their shape when cut or severed, meaning there’s less of a chance of silent rupture or leak. Additionally, gummy bear implants are shaped like anatomical breasts, with more fullness at the bottom. Cohesive gel implants are ideal for patients seeking the most natural feel and appearance of their breast implants.

  • Inframammary Incision

The inframammary incision runs horizontally across the bottom of the breast, where the breast tissue meets the ribcage. This is a very popular choice as it can accommodate large implant sizes, including silicone or gummy bear breast implants.

  • Periareolar Incision

This incision runs in a circle around the areola, or the darker skin around the nipple. Patients choose this option if they are concerned with visible scarring, as the scar is usually disguised by the dark skin. Because the incision is so small, saline implants are the best option because they can be filled after the shell is placed within the breast pocket.

  • Transaxillary Incision

This incision option is ideal for patients who do not want any visible scar on the breast itself, because the transaxillary incision is hidden in the underarms. Through this incision, your surgeon may use an endoscope (a surgical camera) to view the treatment area and insert the saline implant into the breast pocket. While this is a more advanced technique, it results in no visible scarring on the breasts themselves and can result in a faster recovery process.

  • Transumbilical Breast Augmentation (TUBA)

During a transumbilical breast augmentation, the incision is within the navel. Similar to a transaxillary approach, the surgeon uses an endoscope to place the saline implants in the breast pocket and then fills them with saline once they are in place. This option also results in no visible scar on the breasts.

  • Breast Implant Placement

Your breast implants may be placed under the pectoral muscle, called the submuscular placement, or above the muscle and under the breast tissue, called subglandular placement. The submuscular placement is ideal for patients with little natural breast tissue, as it more adequately hides the implant edges. The subglandular placement requires a shorter recovery period, but the patient must have a little more natural breast tissue to disguise the implant edges.

  • Breast Implant Profile

Breast implant sizing refers to the volume of the implants, or the amount of silicone or saline they contain. The implant profile is a little different: this refers to how much the implant extends out from the body. Breast implant profiles range includes low, moderate, moderate plus, high, and ultra high. Your surgeon can recommend the best option for you based on your goals.

Preparing for Your Breast Augmentation

Many patients want to know how they can best prepare for their surgery, which is a great way to ensure a smooth process. Your expert breast enhancement surgeon will discuss what you need to take care of before your procedure, including:

  • Undergoing necessary medical testing and diagnostics
  • Stopping or pausing certain medications that can affect healing and surgery
  • Quitting smoking

You’ll also need to prepare by taking time off work, usually for about a week, depending on your job. Plan to have someone drive you home from surgery and assist you around the house for the first few days as well.

What to Expect During Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation Consultation

The breast augmentation consultation is the first step in the process, as you will meet with your surgeon and discuss all the customization options mentioned above. Be sure to ask any questions you have and discuss your goals in terms of final results. While there are many options to consider, your surgeon will be able to help you choose the best set of options to achieve the look you want.

Once you have decided if breast augmentation is right for you, your plastic surgeon will create a surgical plan that details the implant size, type, and projection, as well as the incision type and placement. At that time, they will provide you with a cost estimate.

Breast Augmentation Procedure

The breast augmentation procedure is performed using general anesthesia for your comfort, so you will feel no pain during the procedure itself. It is an outpatient procedure, meaning you will be able to go home after surgery.

Once the board-certified anesthesiologist administers the anesthesia, your surgeon will begin the procedure. Through the incisions, they will create a small gap in the breasts called the breast pocket. The implant will be placed using the appropriate technique, and once your surgeon is happy with the results, they will carefully close the incisions with neat sutures. You will be monitored as you wake from anesthesia, and you will be sent home.

Breast Augmentation Recovery & Aftercare

Immediately after your breast augmentation, you will be pretty tired and a little groggy from the anesthesia. It’s essential that you have a responsible driver take you home and stay with you for at least the first 24 hours, in case you need assistance.

Our team will supply you with detailed recovery instructions, but here’s what you can expect initially:

Week One Breast Augmentation Recovery

For the first 24 hours, you will be tired and groggy from anesthesia. Your breasts may have a protective gauze over them or a light surgical bra. Follow your surgeon’s instructions as to how long to wear it.

Discomfort is usually mild enough that prescription pain medication is not needed, although you may request it. Expect your breasts to feel swollen and look bruised; this is completely normal. You will have difficulty raising your arms and bending over at first; limit these actions as you heal. You’ll need to spend the first 48 hours resting as much as possible. It may be helpful for you to sleep with your chest somewhat elevated with cushions, as this can help reduce swelling.

Most patients feel more like themselves after about the third or fourth day post-op, but don’t push yourself. You’ll need to avoid strenuous exercise and activities for at least two weeks, or as instructed by your surgeon.

You’ll likely be able to return to work at the end of your first week post-breast augmentation, although if your job is more physically demanding, you may need to wait a little longer. Be sure to balance plenty of rest with light physical activity, such as walking, to promote healthy blood circulation.

What Results Can I Expect From Breast Augmentation?

You’ll notice an immediate change in your breasts after your breast augmentation, although your final results can take up to six months to appear. Initially, your breasts may appear high on the chest, slightly square or blocky, and feel a little hard to the touch. This is because your breast tissue and muscles are constricting around the implants as a natural reaction. As your body settles and your muscles relax, your implants will also settle into a more natural position and become softer. This process is called the “drop and fluff” and is a sign of the breast augmentation’s final healing stages.

Once your breasts are fully healed, you’ll be able to enjoy your new voluptuous figure, with rounder, fuller breasts that highlight your femininity.

Breast Augmentation FAQs

  • How can I prevent scars after breast augmentation?

Scars are a part of the healing process for any surgery; however, there are some ways you can avoid large or dark scars. As soon as your incision seals, approximately two weeks after surgery, you can begin scar care protocols, such as using silicone sheets or scar creams, to keep the scars soft and supple as they heal. Equally important, using a strong SPF and keeping your scars out of the sun can help keep them light.

With proper care, your scars will fade to a light and thin line that is barely noticeable.

  • How long will my breast implants last?

Breast implants are FDA-approved, but they are not intended to be lifetime devices. While it is impossible to know for certain how long your implants will last, most patients can expect to get at least 10-15 years out of them. However, the older the implants, the higher the risk of complications such as leaks or ruptures.

When deciding to undergo breast augmentation, it’s important to understand that most patients will need to replace their implants at some point in their lives.

  • Is there a more natural augmentation alternative?

If you don’t want silicone or saline breast implants, you still have options for augmenting your breasts. A natural breast augmentation using fat grafting is a popular procedure that involves using liposuction to remove fat from one area of the body and reinjecting it into the breasts for a fuller result.

While it can’t provide as dramatic results as saline or silicone implants, it is considered a more natural option as it uses your own body fat.

  • Can I combine my breast augmentation with another procedure?

Absolutely. If you want to enhance the youthfulness and volume of your breasts, you may benefit from a combination breast lift with augmentation. For a full body transformation, your breast augmentation can be included with a tummy tuck and liposuction for a Mommy Makeover.

Your surgeon will be happy to discuss your options for combining your breast augmentation with other procedures of your choice.
