A Brazilian Butt Lift or BBL is a cosmetic procedure intended to remodel the shape of the buttocks by increasing their size through autologous fat injections. This procedure is often considered a two-in-one due to its unique process: Your surgeon first harvests fat from one or more areas of the body using liposuction before reinjecting this fat into the buttocks for a more rounded curvature.

What to Expect During Brazilian Butt Lift Surgery
Brazilian Butt Lift Consultation
The first step to your dream backside is a consultation with your experienced BBL surgeon. During your consultation, you’ll be able to discuss your goals, including your options for customization. Be sure to ask any questions you have and be specific about what you want in terms of results. Your surgeon will also discuss the procedure steps with you, as well as what you can expect from recovery.
If you and your surgeon decide that a BBL is right for you, they will create a surgical plan that details all the steps of the procedure, the possible techniques used, and any additional surgeries. At that time, they will provide you with an accurate cost estimate.
Brazilian Butt Lift Procedure
Brazilian Butt Lifts are performed using general anesthesia for maximum comfort. It is an outpatient procedure, so you’ll be able to return home after the surgery is over.
Once the board-certified anesthesiologist administers the anesthesia, your surgeon will begin the procedure. They will start by making small incisions around the area where you’ll have liposuction performed. Liposuction incisions are very small, just wide enough for a small, thin tube called a cannula to be inserted. With the cannula, your surgeon will remove layers of fat in smooth back-and-forth motions. This ensures a natural-looking result that looks contoured and slim.
Once they have removed an adequate amount of fat, the fat is then purified to ensure a successful transfer. Next, the purified fat is carefully injected into the buttocks. Dr. Mendieta pioneered a method of fat transfer that layers the fat carefully to create a natural-looking, smooth result. This method also increases the likelihood of a successful graft.
Once your surgeon is satisfied with the results, they will close all incisions. You will be placed in a surgical compression garment that keeps your body contours in shape. After you wake from anesthesia, you will be given post-surgical instructions and will be sent home with your responsible driver.
Brazilian Butt Lift Recovery & Aftercare
You can expect some bruising and swelling after your procedure. Any discomfort can be managed with prescribed pain medicine, which should be filled before your scheduled surgery. Dr. Mendieta highly recommends that his surgical patients consider adding EXPAREL® injections to procedures for managing pain. EXPAREL® reduces pain up to 80%, but must be administered during the procedure.
Depending on the physical demands of the job, most patients may go back to work within 10 to 14 days. Patients are required to wear a supportive compression garment for 6 to 8 weeks. Applying pressure to the buttocks can compromise the success of the fat graft, so you must always use a pillow when sitting during the first 8 weeks.
What Results Can I Expect From a Brazilian Butt Lift?
You should be able to see immediate improvement in the size and shape of your buttocks following Brazilian Butt Lift surgery. However, it takes between three and four months for the swelling to resolve and reveal the final results.

- Blood clots––Blood clots in the legs can move to the heart or lungs, so it is important to engage in light walking during your recovery period.
- Infection––Infection could arise from fat transfer and can be avoided by keeping the incisions clean and using antibiotics.
- Fat embolism––Fat that is injected too deeply can find its way into the bloodstream and make its way to certain organs, causing complications.
- Misshapen buttocks––Contour irregularities could occur if postoperative instructions like sleeping position and wearing compression garments are not followed.

Can I sit down after a BBL?
You will need to use a donut-shaped pillow to keep direct pressure off of your buttocks for at least two to four weeks after your BBL. This ensures that the transferred fat has a good chance to survive the transfer process, resulting in as much volume as possible.

When can I exercise after a BBL?
It’s recommended that you refrain from exercising for at least six weeks after your BBL to protect your transferred fat and to maintain your results. We will send you home with detailed aftercare instructions, as well.
